Windows 7 hardware requirements

With the release of Windows 7, Microsoft is doing something they haven’t really done before – they aren’t making us buy new hardware. Sure, when Vista was released we COULD have upgraded our existing machines from XP, but most of us opted for new gear so we could leave all of the neat bells and whistles turned on – what could be the point of running Vista without Aero, etc.? This time, the minimum requirements for Windows 7 are on par with those of Vista, which is great news! If you are running XP or Vista on a PC that is less than 4 years old, and are happy with it and want to keep it, you should be good to go – but just to be sure, you should run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor will scan your system hardware, installed programs and attached devices. Once complete, the Advisor will report on how well your PC meets the system requirements, if there are any known compatibility issues with your programs and devices, and will also provide guidance on your upgrade options to Windows 7.

The tool is available from the Microsoft Download Center and as of the time of this writing, it is still in Beta, but now is the time to check it out – especially if you want to go the upgrade route.

For those of you who are looking at a larger scale migration, you will want to look at the Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit. MAP does not require any agent software on any computers in the environment and will provide valuable information about the systems on your network that will allow you to get a jump start on your Windows 7 migration plan.
